Are Fibre channel SAN raw volumes the only option for virtual server storage? Can we not use internal storage, loop devices, iSCSI, or NAS? Sort of limits the environment.

Internal storage is coming in Version 3.1. Please contact us if you would like to participate in the Beta.

I want to setup a very small test environment consisting of 1 unit hosting the Virtual Manager and 1 node. Your supported hardware includes IBM xSeries 100. Can I use an xSeries 100 with a single internal hard drive as a node to host 2 or 3 virtual servers. Again, this will not be a production setup, I just want to have a bare minimum setup to get some 'hands on ' time with your product. Thanks.

That sounds like a great setup, as long as the xSeries 100 has a supported processor (see http://www.virtualiron.com/products/servers.cfm).

OK Great. I just want to make sure that I will be able to use the internal hard drive of an xSeries 100 (with Intel Pentium D-9x0) to create the Virtual Servers and that I will NOT need a SAN. Thanks

As long as it's a SCSI or SATA drive, it is supported.

So to confirm, with version 3.1 there is no need for a NAS or SAN? I can just use local disks to the server pending they are scsi or sata?

That is correct. In v3.1, SAN/NAS is no longer a requirement- local SCSI/SATA disks are also now supported. However, if you ever decide to try LiveMigration, then networked storage will be needed.
