I have a setup with one volume group and 1 logical volume. I have 2 vdisks, 49gb each. I am trying to clone a vdisk and I get an error that th destination logical volume is in use. What am I doing wrong? Partha Dutta pdutta@rightmedia.com

Partha, what version of Virtual Iron are you running? Can you go the help about in the Virtualization Manager UI and get the build id?

Are you on a shared network and booting from a CD? Was the Cd created using the 3.1.10.79 VirtualizationServices.iso?

I believe so. This was the whole package I downloaded from the website, so I'd imagine that this is the case. I am on a shared network and booting from a CD. The node has a local 146GB SATA drive in it. The way that I have it configured (as far as disk volumes) looks like this: VG : videv, 149GB LV : lv_videv, 149GB VDISK: vdisk_golden, 40GB VDISK: vdisk_videv01, 40GB I am trying to clone vdisk_golden (as vdisk_videv02). This is the exact error message: [Error 429] Can not clone Virtual Disk: vdisk_golden; destination Logical Volume: lv_videv is currently in use.

It seems that the the only way to clone a vdisk is if all virtual servers that utilize the logical volume that the vdisk resides in are shut down. Does that mean that the best practice is to have each virtual server using a separate logical volume?

Yes, it's a best practice to have a 1:1 mapping between virtual servers and logical volumes. For example, a Windows virtual server with C:, D:, and E: drives can have all three disks in one logical volume. The next virtual server you create should have another logical volume created for its disks.

That answers my question. Thanks. BTW, Re there any plans on using snapshotting for cloning vdisks? The node that I have has a local SATA drive, and it takes about 13-20 minutes to clone it. This might be a nightly occurrence over 40-50 virtual servers, so it could be problematic.

Snapshots are on our roadmap for later this year.
